A MAN accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a car has told how he was egged on by his friend to touch her.

But Craig Martin insisted that the woman consented to what happened.

Martin and pal Mark Bartlett are accused of offering the 21-year-old a lift home from Portsdown Hill and taking her to Purbrook Heath in Waterlooville where they are alleged to have molested her in the early hours of March 23, last year.

Father-of-one Martin told the jury at Portsmouth Crown Court she had not objected to what he did.

Asked by Simon Foster, prosecuting, if the woman had said she wanted to go home, he said: ‘After everything that had happened.’

Asked if he was reluctant to touch the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, he said: ‘Yes, because I was put in an awkward position.

‘I may have not liked what was going on in the car because it was the first time I have been involved in anything like that.’

When asked if he touched her because his older friend egged him on, he said: ‘Yes and no. But I still could have said no to it if I didn’t want to do it at any point.’

Mr Foster said: ‘You knew perfectly well she was not consenting.’

‘No, I didn’t,’ he replied.

Bartlett, 30, of Three Ways Close, Fareham and Martin, 23, of Totland Road, Wymering, both deny three counts of sexual assault.
