A MAN has been arrested after drugs were seized in a Portsmouth street.

Hampshire Constabulary arrested the 20-year-old, of no fixed abode, while on patrol in Powerscourt Road around 11pm on Tuesday.

The man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class B substance and theft, and remains in custody.

The substance was believed to be cannabis.

Rumours surfaced a weapon had been seized, but police say that was not the case.

Yesterday residents in the area spoke of their surprise over the incident.

Bill Messenbird, 70, of Powerscourt Road, said he had been out for the evening.

‘It’s strange,’ he said.

‘I got back about midnight and didn’t see anything going on. I never heard anything at all. It’s very unusual for there to be police activity in this area.

‘It’s normally very quiet.

‘I suspect most people just pass through.’

Police cars were seen in the area and residents said an ambulance had also turned up on Tuesday evening.

Resident Nick Corn, 52, said two youngsters had been looking through people’s front gardens that morning after the incident.

‘Some lad asked what they were doing and then they just walked up the road,’ he said.

‘I don’t know where they could have gone.’
