A 53-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after an elderly woman’s body was found at a block of flats.

Police revealed today that they made the discovery at Wilmcote House, in Tyseley Road, Somers Town, Portsmouth, on Tuesday.

Officers went to the address following a call from Portsmouth City Council, which was concerned for the welfare of a woman believed to be in her 90s living in a first-floor flat there.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

Door to door enquiries have been carried out and the property has been sealed up.

A police officer has been standing guard at the entrance.

Police said that the man who was arrested has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

He is due to report back to police in November.

Police say that initial enquiries show there is no risk to the wider community.

Formal identification procedures and a post mortem examination have not yet taken place.

Neighbours today told of their shock at what had happened.
