POLICE sealed off part of the road leading onto Whale Island naval base after a van linked to an attempted murder was discovered there last night.

Officers from Sussex Police put out an alert on the registration number after they were called to the home of a 61-year-old woman in Horsham who suffered serious injuries in an attack on Tuesday afternoon.

The van was spotted on Whale Island Way last night, close to Portsmouth International Port.

A 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder by Hampshire police, on behalf of Sussex Police, at the terminal.

Although part of Whale Island Way is sealed off by scenes of crime officers, cars can still pass through.

The suspect remains in custody.
