A THUG who carried out a vicious attack on his former partner could be detained in a secure mental health hospital.

Robert Roberts repeatedly beat Sharon Thompson over two days at her home in Nancy Road, Portsmouth.

The 37-year-old also damaged the bathroom of her flat.

Judge Richard Price said Miss Thompson had suffered a number of broken bones and severe psychological damage as a result of the attack in November last year.

The court heard Roberts has previous convictions for assaults on former partners, including one for rape.

Roberts, of White Lion Walk, Gosport, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage at Portsmouth Crown Court.

Judge Price said: ‘It’s a prolonged and vicious attack over a period of two days.’

He adjourned the case for a psychiatric report to be carried out on Roberts to look at whether he should go to prison or a mental health unit.

Roberts was remanded in custody to a date yet to be fixed.
