A MAN has been charged over a string of ‘fancy dress’ armed betting shop robberies.
Martin Joseph Reilly, 53, of no fixed address, is alleged to have committed nine robberies in which £23,000 was stolen, two attempted robberies, eight counts of possessing a firearm whilst committing an indictable offence, and two of possessing an offensive weapon between June 13 and October 10.
In one of the robberies £3,500 was stolen from Ladbrokes in Arundel Street, Landport, Portsmouth, on August 30.
The others took places at Ladbrokes stores in Brighton, Eastbourne, Woking, Westcliff in Essex, Bedford and Baker Street, London.
Reilly is also charged with robbing Corals betting shops in Bedford and Kettering, Northamptonshire.
And he is alleged to have committed two attempted robberies in Hove and Eastbourne in East Sussex.
Reilly was arrested in Hereford on Saturday and taken to Brighton where he was later charged. He appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court today and was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on January 6.
