A MAN has been charged with murdering an 87-year-old retired police officer found dead at his home in Portsmouth.

Police found Stanley Carter - known as Stan - at the house in Greenwood Avenue, Cosham shortly after 10pm on Sunday.

Stephen Cowdrey, 49, of St Augustine Road, Southsea, is accused of killing Mr Carter at the property between Wednesday and Sunday.

He is remanded in custody and is due to appear before Portsmouth magistrates tomorrow.

Mr Cowdrey was arrested at Portsmouth Central Police Station in Winston Churchill Avenue shortly before 11pm on Sunday.

Police said HM coroner has been informed of the preliminary results of a post-mortem examination.

However the results have not yet been revealed.

Meanwhile detectives have renewed their appeal for information about circumstances surrounding Mr Carter’s death.

They are particularly keen to hear any reports of ‘suspicious behaviour or circumstances’ in Greenwood Avenue between Friday and Sunday.
