A 50-YEAR-OLD man has died in an industrial accident at a scrapyard in Portsmouth.

The man was working at the site off Twyford Avenue, Stamshaw, when he was killed by a piece of equipment which involved a rope attached to a crane at around 12.10pm yesterday but details were not released until today.

Another man was also involved in the accident. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Hampshire Police confirmed that they are working with the Health and Safety Executive in investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and that the Portsmouth coroner has been informed.

Julie Knight, a spokeswoman for Hampshire Constabulary, said: ‘Police can confirm they are investigating the death of a man after a suspected industrial accident at a scrapyard in Portsmouth.

‘Next-of-kin have been informed but police won’t be in a position to confirm the man’s name until all formal identification procedures are completed.

‘The death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.’
