A MAN has admitted claiming more than £6,000 in housing and council tax benefits that he was not entitled to.

Peter Maguire, 66, of Blake Court, South Street in Gosport appeared at Fareham Magistrates’ Court.

He pleaded guilty to two offences in that he dishonestly failed to notify Gosport Borough Council that he was working and also held an undeclared Building Society account.

He received a £500 fine and was ordered to pay £100 towards the council’s costs.

The money he received must be paid back in full to the council.

Councillor Mark Hook, leader of the council, said: ‘Our fraud team are doing an excellent job in continuing to bring people who have committed benefit fraud before the courts, it is something we want to see stamped out and are working tirelessly to achieve.

‘We have great sympathy for those in genuine need and are here to help them, but those who fraudulently claim money to which they are not entitled should be aware – we are out to catch you.’
