A MAN has appeared in court charged with stabbing Edward Vials to death on Christmas Eve.
Marc Robert Lindsey is accused of one count of murder relating to the death of the 47-year-old in Hill Park Road in Gosport.
During his appearance at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court yesterday, the 34-year-old, from Hill Park Road, stood in the dock with a security guard on either side and wore a grey woolly sweater and blue jeans.
He spoke calmly and quietly only to give his name, age and address when asked to identify himself by the bench.
Chairman of the bench Peter Mellor said: ‘This matter is so serious it can only be dealt with at crown court.’
There was no application for bail and Lindsey was remanded in custody until his next court date.
A security guard put handcuffs on him and he was taken back downstairs to the cells.
He is due to appear at Winchester Crown Court on January 2. He has not yet entered a plea.
Lindsey was arrested at the home in Hill Park Road where the dead man was found after police were called at 11.46pm on Monday.
Mr Vials, of Tintern Road in Gosport, was pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics attempted to resuscitate him. A post-mortem examination found he died from a single stab wound.
A file has also been opened by the coroner’s office.
A police cordon around the scene was only removed on Thursday.
Lindsey was charged with murder on Wednesday by Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Investigation Team.
Mr Vials’ family have been too upset to speak to the media.
