POLICE have arrested a man after a 12-year-old girl was grabbed on a cycle path.

The young girl was walking alone in the area of the cycle track behind Kings Road, in Gosport, when she was approached by a man.

He then grabbed the hood of her coat.

The 12-year-old immediately struggled free and returned home where her parents called police.

She was grabbed by the man some time between 5.40pm and 6pm on Wednesday.

A 37-year-old man from Gosport has been arrested and is being held by police.

Hampshire police spokesman Neil Miller said: ‘Police have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with this incident.

‘He remains in police custody at this time.

‘This is a very serious matter and a thorough investigation is being conducted by police officers in Gosport.’

Staff at Brune Park Community College, where the girl is a year seven student, sent out an urgent warning to parents yesterday.

Headteacher Dr Ian Johnson said: ‘In situations like this we can act very quickly to alert parents.

‘We have this system which puts out alerts so we can get messages to parents and students as soon as possible.

‘If any parents have information they should contact the police.’

Councillor Sue Ballard, who is the ward councillor for Elson and has two children who go to Brune Park praised the school’s fast response.

She said: ‘It’s reassuring for parents when something like this happens that they can get the message out.

‘It was a fast response from the school and I’m sure every parent is grateful for that.

‘When I got the message I was able to pass it on to friends and family.’
