POLICE investigating allegations of fraud at a council have charged a former worker.

Conway Warner, of Hook Lane, Warsash, was charged with fraud by abuse of position yesterday. He will appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on October 19.

The 35-year-old was arrested on August 30 by officers investigating alleged fraud at Gosport Borough Council.

The council contacted police after it had concerns over a number of financial transactions at the town hall.

As reported in The News, a recent report from the Audit Commission revealed £146,263 of the council’s expenditure was identified as being fraudulent in the last year alone.

The precise value of the alleged fraud in the case involving Warner has not been made public by the council or police. The council says it expects to recover any lost money.
