A WOMAN was knocked to the ground by a thug who made a failed attempt to snatch her handbag.

The 57-year-old was walking home from the Locks Heath shopping centre in Locks Heath, on a footpath leading to Ilex Crescent between 8pm and 8.10pm on Thursday when the attack happened.

A man on a bicycle approached her from behind and grabbed her, pushing her to the ground and tried to take her handbag.

The victim screamed and the suspect let her go, riding off towards Locks Road. The woman was unharmed and nothing was taken.

The suspect is described as white, aged in his late 30s to early 40s, with short dark hair and a beard or moustache. He was wearing a green T-shirt and beige shorts.

Police are seeking witnesses to the incident.

Detective Constable Geoff Pike said: ‘The victim remembers speaking to a woman after the incident in Ilex Crescent who stated that the suspect had stopped and asked her for the time and we would like to hear from her – or any other witnesses in the area at the time who may have seen the attempted robbery, or saw a man matching the above description.

‘This was understandably a very shocking incident for the victim and we are very keen to trace this man before he re-offends.’
