POLICE have launched an investigation after a man’s body was found on the beach at Southsea.

Someone walking along the beach near the Pyramids Centre made the discovery at around 5.30pm last night.

Officers are keen to speak to a group of 10 to 15 foreign students and a teacher who approached workmen at the Pyramids that afternoon and told them that they had found an item on the beach.

Detective Chief Inspector Dick Pearson said: ‘We are in the very early stages of our investigation, but would appeal for anyone who saw something on the beach in this area or who were at the beach or promenade in front of the Pyramids Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

‘We are currently working to establish the identity of the body, who we believe to be a man, and to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.’

Anyone with information should call Hampshire Constabulary’s major investigation team on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 55 111.
