A MAN was taken to hospital with puncture wounds after trying to stop a burglary in Gosport.

The 51-year-old came across a man trying to break into a property in Bevis Road at around 11.20pm yesterday.

This is a particularly nasty incident in which a member of the public was injured after trying to stop a potential crime from taking place.

He tried to stop the man but received several puncture wounds during the resulting scuffle.

The victim was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he is currently in a stable condition.

Police are appealing for information following the incident.

The attacker was described as white, aged between 23 and 27-years-old, of heavy build and around 5ft 11ins tall.

He had short hair and wore a white T-shirt and a dark jumper.

A 34-year-old man was arrested in connection with this incident and is currently in police custody.

Detective Sergeant David Pugh, of Fratton police station, said: ‘This is a particularly nasty incident in which a member of the public was injured after trying to stop a potential crime from taking place.

‘It occurred late at night and after pub closing hours, and we would like anyone who witnessed this incident to get in touch.’
