A MAN was threatened with a cricket bat during an attempted robbery.

The 21-year-old victim was walking along a path near Winston Churchill Avenue in Portsmouth when a man asked him for a cigarette.

He was then confronted by another man carrying a cricket bat, who demanded he hand over his phone and wallet.

The victim managed to outrun the men and escaped unhurt just after midnight on Thursday.

Detective Constable Fiona Wright said: ‘Although this took place after midnight, a male carrying a cricket bat would have been an odd sight and members of the public may have seen him carrying it earlier in the evening and can assist in preventing this type of incident from happening again.’

If you have any information, call Det Con Wright on 101.
