POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was sexually assaulted.

The 27-year-old was walking alone through Petersfield Heath at 9pm on Friday when the violent assault took place.

Detective Inspector Jane Hart, who is leading the investigation, said: ‘This was a violent and unprovoked attack which has left the victim completely devastated.

‘We have a team of detectives working on this investigation and there are also officers conducting patrols in the area. However, I would like to reassure people that incidents like this are extremely rare.

‘This area is very popular with dog walkers so there may have been people using the Heath around the time of this incident who may have seen something.

‘If you were in the area and saw a group of men or anything suspicious, please contact police as soon as possible.’

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Winchester CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
