Pensioner, 84, falls to ground in Southsea bag snatch robbery

A PENSIONER who tried to stop a robber from stealing her bag was dragged to the ground.

The 84-year-old was in Burgoyne Road, on the junction with Furness Road, in Southsea, yesterday.

It happened at about 5pm to 5.20pm when the man grabbed her handbag from behind and the woman tried to keep hold of it.

But the robber tugged the bag, making the victim fall to the ground.

The bag black faux leather bag had a black leather purse with £70 in it, along with a bus pass and debit card.

Hampshire police said the man was 5ft 6in, of slight build and was wearing a long coat with the hood up.

It comes less than a week after Kelly West, 32, was robbed in Devonshire Avenue, Southsea, at about 9.10pm.

Police are not linking the two robberies.

A police spokeswoman said: ‘Extra police patrols have been put in place to provide reassurance in the area and to house to house enquiries are being conducted.

‘Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or saw a man matching the description in that area.

‘Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting 44160061604, alternatively call the anonymous Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.’
