UP to 30 schoolgirls were involved in a brawl in a quiet residential street.

Shocked neighbours called police after girls reported to be aged between about 13 and 15 were seen shouting and fighting in Vernon Road, Copnor, Portsmouth, near Monckton Road.

At least five police cars sped to the scene at about 3.25pm yesterday and the crowd quickly dispersed.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman said no formal complaints were made to officers on their arrival. She added: ‘Police had a call to reports of up to 30 schoolgirls fighting in the street. One girl was on the floor being assaulted.’

One resident, who lives nearby but does not want to be named, said: ‘I heard shouting and running, A group of children walked down Vernon Road and then the all came running back about 15 minutes later.

‘There was a fight in the middle of the road.

‘It’s scary.’
