MORE than 200 drivers have been caught using mobile phones at the wheel.

It comes as Hampshire police’s crackdown on distraction drivers ended last night.

Traffic officers have stopped 205 people, with one person claiming they were filming a car that cut them up.

Sgt Rob Heard said: ‘These results are disappointing, and show that many people are still not understanding the dangers of using a mobile phone whilst driving. Distraction can be a major contribution in collisions.’

The force has revealed some excuses used by those caught by officers – including one playing a game.

One driver said: ‘I wasn’t using the phone, I was videoing a car that cut me up…’

Another said: ‘This is hypocritical, but I hate people using their phones while driving.’
