Police were today continuing to question a suspect after a pensioner was savagely attacked outside a Portsmouth pub.

The 67-year-old man was assaulted outside The First Post in High Street, Cosham around 4pm yesterday.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said a 25-year-old man from Portsmouth arrested shortly after the incident and remains in custody.

Scenes of crime officers have been carrying out a detailed search and analysis of the pavement outside the pub.

Detective Sergeant Rob Faricy said: ‘This is an isolated incident which occurred on a busy high street on a Saturday afternoon.

‘We have spoken to a number of people who saw what happened but would appeal to anyone else who has not yet come forward to get in touch.’
