DETECTIVES have until 9pm tonight to question a 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering Christopher Butler.

Investigators from the major crime team at Fratton police station launched a major operation following the 27-year-old’s death on New Year’s Day.

Yesterday evening at around 9pm they arrested a man, 32, and have 24 hours to question him.

After that they must apply to a senior officer, a superintendent, for another 12 hours.

If that time elapses officers must ask a court to authorise up to a total of 96 hours.

Mr Butler’s body was found in a shared house in Waverley Road, Southsea, at 12.35am.

Hampshire police have said his death was suspicious. A Home Office post mortem was inconclusive.

Residents have spoken of their shock at his death.

A 23-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man, who were arrested on suspicion of murder on January 2, have been bailed until February 17.
