POLICE have until Tuesday to quiz a man who is being held on suspicion of murder after a pensioner’s body was found at a house in Portsmouth.

Police discovered the man, believed to be in his 80s, dead at an address in Greenwood Avenue, Cosham, shortly after 10pm yesterday.

Hampshire police said officers searched the property after ‘responding to information received’.

A 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder at Portsmouth Central Police Station in Winston Churchill Avenue shortly before 11pm yesterday.

He is still in custody and police have been given until 9.45pm tomorrow to question him.

Officers have yet to name the victim but formal identification will take place tomorrow.

A post-mortem examination is continuing this evening to establish the exact cause of the man’s death.

His next-of-kin have been informed.

Officers probing are conducting house-to-house enquiries in the area.

Meanwhile, residents of Greenwood Avenue have reacted with shock that one of their neighbours has been murdered.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hampshire Major Investigation Team at Fratton Station on 101.
