THE man found dead on New Year’s Day has been named – and police say they are treating his death as murder.

Christopher Butler, 27, from Southsea, was discovered at an address in Waverley Road, Southsea at 12.35am.

A Home Office post mortem examination carried out yesterday was inconclusive but police say they are treating the matter as a murder.

A large part of Waverley Road was cordoned off by police while they searched the area and quizzed neighbours.

Mr Butler was believed to have been staying at the house over the Christmas and New Year period. He was described by people who knew him as a ‘harmless’ man.

Detectives are investigating a number of lines of enquiry in conjunction with local officers.
