DETECTIVES have launched a probe after a man was found dead at a Southsea home.
Hampshire police said the man’s body was found at the two-storey terraced property in Francis Avenue at about 9.40am yesterday.
It is not yet known how he died.
His death was last night being treated as ‘unexplained’. Police would not reveal any further details.
The News understands the man was found with injuries which indicate he could have been assaulted. However this has not been confirmed and is understood to form part of the investigation.
The man has not yet been named.
A post-mortem examination into his sudden death was due to be held today.
Yesterday several houses on the same side of Francis Avenue, including the home in which the man’s body was found, were cordoned off with blue and white police tape.
Police cars and vans lined the street and forensics experts in blue-and-white suits went in and out of the house throughout the afternoon, examining the scene.
A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said police had knocked on her door as part of their investigation and asked if she had seen or heard anything the night before.
She said: ‘The police came around here this morning and said “did you hear anything last night? Because there’s been an incident”.
She said nobody seemed to know what had happened at the house.
‘There’ve been men in forensics suits there all day, but they’re not saying anything at the moment.
‘I don’t think they want to tell anyone.’
Another neighbour said police had also knocked on his door.
He said: ‘They came and asked if we’d seen anyone and if we knew our neighbours.
‘But there are a lot of multi-occupancy houses around here and we don’t know them.’
A student who lives in the road said he had also witnessed the activity in the street. He said: ‘There are police and forensic teams outside. There was a fair bit of what appears to be forensic activity, it seemed serious. Three houses were cordoned off.’
A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: ‘Police were called to a house on Francis Avenue in Portsmouth at around 9.40am following the discovery of a man’s body at the address.
‘The cause of death is currently unknown and is being treated as unexplained.’
