POLICE have cordoned off a pavement outside a block of flats after a man was attacked with what is believed to be a machete.
Officers were called at 6.25pm following reports of a disturbance in Sultan Road, Buckland, Portsmouth.
The victim suffered facial injuries in the attack and is in a serious condition in hospital.
Police say a bladed weapon has been found at the scene and they have moved to reassure people in the area.
A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: ‘Police were called to reports of an attack in Sultan Road Portsmouth at 6.26pm today.
‘On arrival a 28-year-old man was found to be seriously injured.
‘He was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham where he remains in a serious, but not life-threatening condition.
‘Police believe the incident to be a targeted attack and it’s not thought that other members of the public were in danger.
‘Officers are in the area conducting enquiries to locate the offender.’
No arrests have been made but police officers are stood guard at the two storey block of flats and have cordoned off the pavement where the assault took place.
Police officers are stood on the balcony of the flats and pictures are being taken of the scene.
The road remains open to traffic.
