POLICE want two key witnesses to come forward after an attempted robbery in Portsmouth.

Between 8.30pm and 8.45pm on Sunday, a 21-year-old man was walking with a friend along Newcome Road towards Fratton Road when he was approached by a man.

The robber demanded money from the victim and then pinned him up against a wall. The victim was able to get away, but the offender caught up with him in Fratton Road.

The victim shouted at a female member of the public to help him and then a male passer-by.

The robber told the male that they were friends and were just ‘mucking about’. The victim then ran away and flagged down a passing police car.

Detective Sergeant Pauline Prior said: ‘We are keen to trace both of these people who are potential witnesses. We are also keen to speak to any other members of the public who may have witnessed this incident to come forward and speak to us.’

A 32-year-old man from Portsmouth has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and is in custody.
