POLICE in Sussex have hailed their success in tracking down paedophiles on the internet.

The force’s Paedophile On-Line Investigation Team (Polit) was launched two-and-a-half years ago, and since then has arrested a total of 83 suspects.

A report is due to be presented to Sussex Police Authority’s Protective Services Scrutiny Committee tomorrow, which will highlight significant investigations undertaken by the unit and plans for its future.

The Polit was set up in 2008 to identify and arrest anyone possessing, making and distributing images and videos of child abuse, and has received 251 referrals from other agencies.

Lionel Barnard, chairman of the protective services scrutiny committee, said: ‘We are all too aware just how awful the nature of these crimes are and I am so pleased to hear how successful the Polit has been.

‘The work by officers in this area is outstanding and I truly congratulate them for the work they have done – and continue to do – so well.’
