Readers have delivered a decisive verdict to the question: ‘Should the penalty for using a mobile phone when driving be an automatic ban?’

We started our poll after Hampshire Police revealed that scores of motorists are still being caught breaking the law despite tougher penalties being introuduced.

Nearly 200 drivers were caught in a police crackdown on drivers using mobile phones at the wheel.

Of the 593 readers who voted, 78 per cent said yes to an automatic ban and 22 per cent said no.
