Police have closed an alleyway in Cosham after an indecent assault on a teenager last night.

A 17-year-old girl has told police she was assaulted by a man in the alleyway, which links Colwell Road and Northern Road in Cosham, between 6pm and 6.45pm yesterday.

Specialist officers have been in contact with the girl to ensure her welfare, and to start gathering more details about the exact circumstances.

Initial enquiries have established that a suspect was one in a group of four men aged in their mid-20s.

One of the four was carrying a black crash helmet with a red motif. The man seen carrying a helmet is not a suspect.

Detectives are keen to hear from any members of the public who were using the alleyway linking Colwell Road and Northern Road early yesterday evening.

Officers are additionally appealing for anybody who noticed a girl who appeared upset or in tears while sitting at the side of the alleyway between 6pm and 8pm yesterday.

Part of the alleyway has been sealed off by police for forensic enquiries. House-to-house enquiries are also being carried out in the community.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: ‘We are investigating a report of an assault.

‘Enquiries to establish the full details are in their early stages.’

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact detectives at Fratton Police Station by phoning 101 and quoting Operation Tomorrow.
