SIX people charged in connection with an alleged internet dating website scam have appeared in court.
The five men and one woman are each accused of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.
The charges follow a lengthy investigation into an alleged scam in which women were asked to hand over significant amounts of cash after meeting men online on the dating website match.com.
Police have said there are alleged victims across England.
Emmanuel Oko, 29, Brooke Boston, 28, Monty Emu, 28, and Eberechi Ekpo, 26, all from Southsea, Chukwuka Ugwu, 28, of Somers Town, Portsmouth, and Adewunmi Nusi, 26, of Hermitage, Berkshire, spoke only to confirm their names at Winchester Crown Court.
Nusi, of Bomford Close, Hermitage, Berkshire, and Boston, of Chelsea Road, Southsea, were given conditional bail during their appearance in the glass-panelled dock.
Oko, of Waverley Grove, Emu, of Frensham Road, Ekpo, of Adair Road and Ugwu, of Somers Road, Somers Town, all appeared via video link from Lewes prison in West Sussex.
Those four defendants were remanded in custody.
No pleas were entered and no trial date has been set.
However the court heard the trial, which is expected to last more than eight weeks, is likely to be heard outside Hampshire.
The six defendants are due to reappear at Winchester Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on May 23.
