A 42-year-old man has been charged with indecently assaulting a girl nearly 10 years ago.

Jamie Ireland is alleged to have assaulted the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, between March and April, 2002.

The girl was under the age of 16 at the time.

Ireland, of Ferry Road, Eastney, did not enter any pleas to two charges of indecent assault when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

The magistrates ruled that the allegations are so serious they should be heard in the crown court.

Ireland was released on bail to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court in March.

As part of the conditions of his bail he was told not to contact the alleged victim or her relatives.
