A POLICE raid has been carried out this morning on a Portsmouth scrap metal dealer under new laws that were introduced earlier this year.

Vans full of officers descended on an industrial estate with a warrant in the city at around 9.30am.

Under the newly enacted Scrap Metal Act, dealers are required to register with the local authority in the area in which they trade. It is also now against the law for dealers to pay for metal in cash and must keep complete records of where all metal has come from.

The authorities say they have concerns about the business that is currently being searched.

The law came into action in October, but the industry was given two months before enforcement action began on December 1
