THIEVES have smashed doors and trashed offices at a Portsmouth theatre before stealing a heavy safe containing £1,000.
Richard Stride, artistic director at Groundlings Theatre in Kent Street, Portsea, said he felt ‘completely gutted’ when police called him at 1.30am today to inform him of the raid.
‘It feels like you climb Everest and you’re near the top and someone has just shoved you straight back down,’ he said.
Pictures taken by Richard show some of the destruction caused by thieves before they removed the safe from the theatre’s office.
Some classes due to take place today have been cancelled. Registration for the Victorian Festival of Christmas at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, which were planned for today, will continue.
