MAGISTRATES have ordered a thief to do unpaid work.

Stephen Southern stole a bottle of Amaretto, worth £9, from Tesco in Portsmouth.

At the time of the offence he was serving a community order, handed down by the courts for an assault on a police officer.

Southern, 20, of Edinburgh Road, Landport, Portsmouth, pleaded guilty to theft and admitted breaching the community order when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

He will have to carry out 105 hours of community service within the next 12 months.
