MONTHLY domestic abuse support sessions are to be held in Portsmouth.

It comes after councillors introduced surgeries for victims needing support in October.

Tory environment and community safety boss, Councillor Robert New, who is leading the initiative, said: ‘At the start of the year I started working with other councillors to raise awareness of domestic abuse.

‘Born out of the many sessions was an idea for councillors to run their own domestic abuse surgeries.

‘We’re all elected to help our residents and who else would be better placed to take ownership of help for domestic abuse sufferers than the very people who are community leaders?’

Cosham Tory councillor Hannah Hockaday, who has already held a support session, said: ‘In the face of less funding being available, it’s right that we take domestic abuse help and bang the drum in the community.’
