A SAILOR was set upon by three robbers in an unprovoked attack.

The victim, 21, was walking back to HMS Excellent at Whale Island in Portsmouth when the gang attacked him near the Shell garage on Mile End Road.

He handed over £65 after one of the men demanded his wallet.

They then fled the scene between 11.30pm on Wednesday and 12.30am on Thursday.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Allison Fraser of Portsmouth CID said: ‘The victim is a Royal Navy employee who was walking back to HMS Excellent. He was dropped off by a taxi driver near to the Shell Victory Garage on Mile End Road.

‘The victim was spoken to by a woman at the garage who offered him a lift, which he declined.

‘He was attacked moments later by three men with no warning, provocation or apparent reason. One man demanded his wallet, and the victim handed over £65 to him before the three men ran off.

‘He has been left with grazes and bruises to his face and right elbow.’

‘This assault happened next to a main road, so it is possible that people passing by may have seen something. I appeal to anyone who may have seen the suspects or the victim, including the woman who offered him a lift from the Shell Garage.’

Anyone with information is asked to call Det Con Fraser at Fratton police station on 101 or 0845 0454545.
