Shocked residents today told of their horror after a hammer attack on a 17-year-old girl in Portsmouth.

Police are hunting a man who carried out the savage assault in Shearer Road, Fratton, last night.

Cllr Julie Swan, a ward councillor for Fratton, urged people to get in touch with the police with information.

She said: ‘This is nothing short of barbaric. I urge people to share the information and get in touch with the police so they can catch whoever has done this.’

Cllr Dave Ashmore, also a ward councillor for Fratton, said: ‘Let’s hope she makes a full recovery. This is down the road from me, you just don’t expect it.

‘It’s terrible. I have kids of my own, and this is someone’s daughter. It’s shocking.’
