THREE men in balaclavas who tried to break in to a shop were beaten back by an employee wielding a broom.

A member of staff arriving for work at the Bognor Cheque Exchange in the High Street heard noises at the back of the building and found a man climbing in through a window at about 9.30am on Tuesday.

The staff member thrust a broom at him and the man ran off, accompanied by two others who were outside.

All three were wearing black clothing and balaclavas. Police believe they drove off in a black 2014 registered car with blacked out windows.

Det Con Graham Slack said; ‘This was a very unusual incident for that time of day. If you were in the area and saw these men, particularly if you saw them after they left the building, please contact us via 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk, or call us on 101 quoting serial 0272 of 2/12. Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.’
