DISASTER was averted after fire crews rushed to put out a blaze in a skip near a school.

Firefighters were called to Portchester Community School, in White Hart Lane, last night.

An initial report to the fire service said the school itself was ablaze, but crews from Cosham, Portchester and Fareham discovered contents of a skip nearby were on fire when they arrived at 9.30pm.

Portchester fire station posted a message on Twitter saying: ‘Good early attendance prevented fire spread. Numerous calls received by control.’
