A NEW police and crime commissioner has extended the contract of a force’s chief constable.

Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has extended the contract of Chief Constable Martin Richards. He came to office in 2008 and the extension means he will serve the maximum term allowed.

Ms Bourne said: ‘I am extremely pleased to announce that Mr Richards’ contract of employment has been extended until October 2014.

‘This gives us almost two years to build on the professional relationship we have already established.

‘We have had some very good discussions and I am looking forward to working with him.’

Mr Richards said: ‘It is a great responsibility, honour and something I am incredibly passionate about.’
