A SECURITY guard was attacked with a bottle in Portsmouth by a gang of thugs.

The supermarket guard was attacked and injured near the Tesco store in Crasswell Street, Landport, after asking a group of people to stop banging on the shop’s window.

After the attack on New Year’s Eve the 38-year-old security guard and a colleague chased the group to Temple Street where they tried to detain one person but were again threatened and attacked by a group.

The security guard managed to pull a branch from a tree to defend himself and made it back to the store safely and police were called.

It happened shortly after 6pm.

Officers have spoken to some witnesses but are asking for anyone else who saw anything to come forward.

Part of the fracas in Temple Street happened near The Mars pub.

Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call Detective Constable Steve Ryan at Fratton CID on 101.

The security guard underwent an operation for his injuries in hospital and is now recovering.

Five people, all from Portsmouth, have been arrested.

They are three men aged 27, 31 and 30 and two women aged 27 and 29.

They have been released on bail pending further enquiries until March 31, 2015.
