A cruel thief stole cash from a 95-year-old woman after conning his way into her home.

The man got into the house in Victoria Road, Hayling Island, by claiming he could do work in the pensioner’s garden.

Cut after following her into the house after she answered the door, he got into a bedroom and stole her handbag, which contained a small amount of cash.

Police today appealed for help in tracing the thief, who struck just before 11am yesterday.

The man is described as white, with a round face. He is 5ft 5ins to 5ft 6ins tall and around 35 years of age.

The victim described him as being of average build with light coloured hair. He was wearing a fluorescent jacket with no sleeves.

Detective Sergeant Liz Brunt said: ‘We would appeal to anyone who may be able to help us identify this man.

‘We also like to hear from anyone else who may have been subject to cold calling of a similar nature by a male fitting the description in the area at that time.

Anyone with information should contact DS Brunt at Havant police station on 101. Alternatively call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
