TRAVELLERS who descended on a seafront car park have finally left after almost two weeks.
The group set up camp on Hayling Island seafront, in a car park belonging to Havant Borough Council, at the bottom of Chichester Avenue.
The travellers were paying to park there during the day but a bylaw prevents anyone parking on the seafront overnight.
Yesterday was the first date available for a court hearing to gain a possession order which would force the travellers to move on and ban them from moving on to any other part of the beach.
However, the group packed up on Thursday evening – before the council was able to obtain the possession order.
Gary Morton, the council’s environmental quality officer, said: ‘We have been in close communication with them and they knew we were going to court on Friday to obtain a possession order so that’s why they have gone.
‘We have the land back and they’ve moved on from the site leaving it extremely clean as I would expect them to.’
Throughout their stay the travellers had bagged up their rubbish and it was cleared by the council.
The group is believed to have split up and both groups have moved off the island.
