A 17-year-old boy suffered injuries to his face and the 14-year-old girl suffered injuries to her hand in the assault outside Miltoncross Academy in Milton Road, Milton, Portsmouth.

It happened at around 3.30pm yesterday. Police confirmed a weapon was used in the assault.

The boy has been bailed until June 8.

A 27-year-old woman from Southsea, who asked not to be named, said she saw the school was cordoned off yesterday.

And she said eight police officers were outside the school this morning.

‘There were about eight police near the traffic lights and bus stop,’ she said.

‘It looked like they were speaking to the kids when they were coming in.

‘They were probably scared to go back into the school.

‘It’s horrific. That’s pretty damn bad.’

The spokeswoman added: ‘We would like to reassure the community that we believe this to be an isolated incident at this time.

‘We would like to thank those who have already come forward in assisting us with this investigation at its early stages.’

Fiona Calderbank is the principal at Miltoncross.

In a statement she said: ‘We would like to reassure our students, staff and parents that the safety and wellbeing of all who attend our school is of the highest importance to us and will continue to underpin everything we do.’

She added: ‘Police are conducting an investigation into the events that took place. During this time, we are unable to offer any other comments but we will continue to work closely with the police and support them in their ongoing investigations.’
