A MAN has been charged after a pensioner was assaulted in Gosport.

Police announced tonight that Duncan Snellgrove, 28, of Howe Road, Gosport has been charged with grievous bodily harm following a serious assault on Sunday (September 25).

A 69-year-old man hit his head on the road following a dispute on the one-way system on Bury Road in Gosport at around 5.50pm.

He was with his wife who was in a wheelchair, when he had an altercation with another man who had been on a bicycle and who cycled off towards Stoke Road.

The injured man is still being treated at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham for a serious head injury.

Snellgrove remains in police custody and is due to appear Portsmouth Magistrates Court tomorrow morning.

Having spoken to other witnesses, officers believe that a member of the public, whom they have not yet spoken to, may have taken photos on their mobile phone around the time of the assault. A number of motorists who may have driven past at the time have also not yet contacted police.

Anyone who may have seen what happened should call 101 quoting Operation Duty (44160362901).
