NO criminal offences have been identified in an incident involving a student performing a sex act in a university library, police have said.

Hampshire police confirmed it received a report today.

Officers met with staff at the university but did not identify any crime.

It comes a day after the university said it was investigating the incident at the library in Cambridge Road, Old Portsmouth.

Multiple photographs showing the student were uploaded to a page on the blogging website Tumblr.

The images, understood to be taken by the student himself, have since been removed at the university’s request.

A spokeswoman said: ‘The university is continuing to investigate the matter, which has now been referred to the police.’

Previously the spokeswoman said the student would face disciplinary action when identified.

Students have reacted with shock after the news emerged.

Joe Graves, 18, who is in his first year studying biology, said: ‘It could have been a cry for help.

‘I get it – everyone has weird things that you can’t help.

‘But it’s not fair to do it somewhere in a public library

‘People are there – you’re not allowed to do it.

‘It’s not fair to put everyone else in your little weird thing.’
