POLICE are appealing for the victim of a brutal assault in Portsmouth city centre to come forward.

Two people were captured on CCTV cameras attacking a man during the early hours of Sunday.

The victim – who is described as a bald, white man in his 40s or 50s – was approached by a group of people at about 3am near Tesco on the corner of Paradise Street and Commercial Road.

Police were alerted by CCTV controllers who saw the man threatened and punched several times.

He was then seen walking away.

Police officers went to the scene and arrested a 16-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man in connection with the assault.

Both have been bailed until May 3 pending further inquiries.

Police say they are now trying to trace the victim of the attack who has not yet come forward.

They are also appealing for any witnesses to the assault to call officers.
