PEOPLE are being warned about cold callers claiming to be from the council in a bid to con them out of money.
Havant Borough Council has been made aware of residents who have had doorstep visits and telephone calls from individuals telling them their council tax banding is incorrect.
They show fake identification badges and, pretending to be from the council, tell them they could be paying too much council tax.
But a spokesman for the council said officers would never do any kind of telephone or door-to-door cold calling regarding council tax banding.
The advice is not to let them into your home, not to engage in conversation with them and notify Hampshire County Council, Trading Standards and the police.
Anyone who believes their property to be in the incorrect banding should visit the Valuation Office Agency at gov.uk or contact 03000 501501 for more information.
