A WOMAN was robbed and assaulted in a busy Portsmouth street.

Detectives investigating the incident are now appealing for witnesses.

Between 7.05pm and 7.30pm on Monday, a 36-year-old woman was sat in her silver Astra car, parked outside the first block of flats in Farmside Gardens, Portsmouth.

A man opened the door of the car and hit the woman in the face, before grabbing her bag and running off.

The bag was brown with red lining and was about 15cm by 30cm.

The woman was left with some reddening to her cheek, but otherwise was uninjured.

The suspect was described as a white man, between 25 and 32-years-old with possibly light coloured or balding hair.

He was of an extremely skinny build, gaunt and pale looking and was wearing a black puffa-type jacket.

Police are looking for anyone who may have been acting suspiciously in the area during that time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Jackie McMurchie of Portsmouth DCID by phoning 101.
